Research Associate in modelling electrons and vibrations in plasmonic nanoparticles
Institute: King’s College London / Imperial College London
Supervisor: Ivana Savic / Johannes Lischner
Closing date: 25 June 2025
Contract: Full-time, Fixed-term appointment for 36 months
About the role:
We are looking for a motivated Research Associate who will contribute to the development of novel atomistic modelling techniques to understand the behaviour of electrons and vibrations in plasmonic nanoparticles for applications in solar energy conversion devices, such as photocatalysts or solar cells.
What you would be doing:
You will perform research in the group of Professor Johannes Lischner (https://www.imperial.ac.uk/materials/about/our-people/) under the co-supervision of Dr Ivana Savic (King’s College London). The purpose of this role is to carry out research on the Leverhulme Trust Research Project titled “Harnessing electron-phonon interactions in nanoplasmonic solar energy conversion”. The goal is to develop new computational methods that will enable design of metallic nanoparticles with dramatically increased efficiency of solar to chemical energy conversion by exploiting the interactions of hot carriers generated by light with lattice vibrations.
What we are looking for:
We are looking for a candidate with a PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or a related discipline with significant expertise and experience in materials modelling, the development of new modelling techniques and their implementation into computer codes. Ideally, the candidate should have experience in quantum-mechanical electronic structure theory, the simulation of optical properties and the modelling of nanoplasmonic systems.
What we can offer you:
- The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity.
- Grow your career: gain access to Imperial’s sector-leading dedicated career support for researchers as well as opportunities for promotion and progression.
- Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 39 days off a year and generous pension schemes).
- Be part of a diverse, inclusive and collaborative work culture with various staff networks and resources to support your personal and professional wellbeing.
- We provide a wide-ranging benefits package that includes resources, tools and networks to promote a positive working environment.
- Pensions – excellent employer contributions
- Season Ticket loan – interest free.
- Childcare facilities – Early Years Education Centre
- Childcare vouchers – salary sacrifice scheme.
- Staff accommodation
- Our flagship sports centre and gym in South Kensington Campus
Further Information
The expected start date is September 1, 2025, or soon thereafter.
*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £43,003 to 46,297 per annum.
