Research summary
Prof. D Flemming Hansen has been actively involved with the development of solution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy for more than two decades and he was one of the first to show that deep learning tools can be developed to accurately transform NMR data to obtain higher resolution.
Currently, Flemming is focussing on fully integrating AI with both NMR and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These two experimental techniques are ubiquitous in material sciences, medical sciences, structural biology, and clinical diagnosis. However, the analysis of NMR spectra and MRI images still largely depends on interpretations by specialists with decades of training, which means that these techniques have effectively only been available to a small group of scientists.
By integrating AI and deep learning with magnetic resonance, Flemming is developing autonomous analysis tools that will make even the most advanced NMR and MRI techniques available to every scientist. Not only will more sensitive and autonomous methods emerge, e.g., to characterise macromolecular interactions (NMR) and for non-invasive evaluation of tumour characteristics (MRI), but through this research, magnetic resonance will truly become a complementary technique to, for example, cryo-electron microscopy, mass spectrometry, and AlphaFold2 predictions.
